Thread Veins are little blue, purple or red veins that are visible just underneath the skin on the face and body. Although harmless, thread veins can be very unsightly and make the sufferer feel self-conscious, particularly when the veins appear in exposed areas – most commonly the face or legs.
Although the exact cause of thread veins and spider vains are not known, there are many reasons as to why they appear, such as; hereditary factors, heat, alcohol and hormonal changes. These are all thought of as triggers for this skin condition, but that doesn’t mean that they cannot be treated.
At Aesthetics of Essex’s Upminster clinic, we have a treatment called Scleroptherapy. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to improve the appearance of thread veins and spider veins, or eliminate them completely.
Sclerotherapy is a safe, non-surgical procedure which involves injecting a saline treatment directly into the vein. This treatment has been well practiced and it has been evolving for over 150 years. The process is quick and pretty basic, recovery time is also minimal. We have experienced therapists specialising in this procedure making it virtually painless and no need for topical anaesthetic.
We will provide you with a free consultation for thread vein removal, and recommend the number of sessions required for the best results.

A chemical solution or Sclerosing agent is injected at several points along the veins. The solution or Sclerosing agent is injected through a very fine needle, directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the veins which causes the vein walls to collapse, forcing the blood to reroute through healthier veins. The collapsed vein is reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades over a period of 2-8 weeks and the appearance is significantly improved – resulting in much clearer, vein-free skin.
Following the injections, it is important that veins stay in a collapsed state, therefore cotton balls and a compression wrap may be applied to promote proper healing and help assist shrinkage of the veins. After your treatment you will be required to wear compression tights for at least three days. These tights will not need to be worn overnight, apart from that; your daily activities can be resumed after treatment like normal.
The number of veins injected in one treatment session depends on the size and location of the veins, therefore this treatment can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how many injections are needed.
The number of sessions required for maximum results will depend on a variety of factors, such as; the thickness of the veins, the length of the veins, the individuals’ age and health. You will be advised on the number of sessions needed during your free Sclerotherapy consultation.
This treatment is the perfect solution to many people who suffer with thread veins, however Sclerotherapy is not suitable for people with large varicose veins, or those who have had veins removed via surgery before.

What are thread veins?
Thread veins or spider veins are the little blue, purple or red veins that are visible just underneath the skin. Whilst they are not medically dangerous, they are very unpopular, especially with women, because they look so unsightly.
Does it hurt?
Usually only the very tip of the needle is inserted into the skin, whilst this can be experienced as a tiny scratch, it should not be more painful than plucking hair.
How often will I need to have this treatment?
You will most likely need several treatments spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. Although the number of treatments required varies, most people will need two to four sessions.
What/who is it suitable for?
Thread veins on the legs. Laser and IPL machines are more suitable if you have large areas of your legs affected by thread veins, and microwave treatment may be a better option for very small thread veins that are difficult to inject or that are in smaller areas.
