Chemical Peels 101

Chemical peels are a popular antiaging treatment for skin rejuvenation and skin pigmentation correction. Chemical peeling is a process used for the improvement of the skins appearance and texture, or as a treatment for various skin conditions such as acne and Rosacea.

Benefits of Chemical peels
Chemical peels can be performed on the face, neck for facial rejuvenation, or hands for hand rejuvenation. The can be used to:

– Reduce fine lines
– Treat sun damaged skin
– Improve the appearance of mild scars and acne scars
– Treat certain types of acne
– Reduce visible age spots, freckles and melasma
– Improve the overall look and texture of the skin
Types of Chemical Skin Peels
There are a number of different peeling types – superficial, medium and deep – that aesthetic practitioners can perform non-invasively for facial rejuvenation. The depth of the peel depends of a number of factors, such as the chemicals used, method of application, and skin condition.

Superficial peels are the mildest type of peel, containing mild acids that penetrate and exfoliate the top layers of skin (the epidermis) to correct skin texture and pigmentation. The typical procedure for a superficial peel is where the liquid or paste is applied to the skin, left on for several minutes, and then wiped off.

Medium peels commonly contain TCA, and are used to penetrate the skin deeper than superficial peels, and cause a second-degree burn of the skin. The procedure for a medium skin peel is similar to the one above, however the chemical solution is left on for a longer period of time to enable it to soak deeper into the skin.

Deep skin peels are most suited to treating acne scars and wrinkles; the solution penetrates to the lower layer of the dermis, and encourages new collagen production. Deep chemical peels are the most powerful, non-surgical method for facial skin rejuvenation. There is a higher risk of complications with deep skin peels as they penetrate deeper and cause a wound in the skin, triggering a healing response, however are effective in treating deep lines and wrinkles, scars and pigmentation.
